While many prominent manuscripts have been fully digitized and are readily available online, many more appear only as catalogue entries. The items listed here are by no means exhaustive. Whether this be in the form of an ancient (or an ostensibly ancient) manuscript that is said to contain hidden secrets from the past or a more modern grimoire or book of shadows that is purposefully imbued with power based on physical ingredients or special rituals, the physicality of books can be as important as their content. Physical books and manuscripts often play a central role in the occult. Aside from physical evidence (age and composition of ink, paper, velum, etc) linguistic analysis can also reveal the likely origin and composition of purportedly ancient texts. While modern manuscript studies can reveal more detailed information about when and where a text was created, the fictional providence of occult texts many times has a powerful effect on how it was received and viewed. Many are purported to be based on ancient or older texts, have pseudepigraphic authors, or are unique in one way or another. They are included in this section because the physical manuscripts require study and not just the content within them. This section contains important manuscripts primarily from the pre-modern era. ![]() ![]() ![]() Our tapes are applied at room temperature and then the seam is pressed under heat to set the adhesive. The DCF backed tape is important because it adds Dyneema® fibers running parallel to the seam so the seam does not stretch under load (one of the most common failures for DCF tents is when this step is skipped, leading to the seams stretching and cracking under load). We use a double sided tape between the overlapping panels of material, plus we add single sided DCF backed tape on the outside of the seam. Hot bonding construction also uses adhesive tape, but with a special heat activated adhesive that is stronger and much more temperature stable. They can slip in hot weather or fail in extreme cold. Double sided tape works well and is the most common method, but these adhesives still weaken in extreme temperatures. Sewing is the least desirable option because unwoven materials like DCF have poor ability to hold stitching, so the seams are much weaker. We recommend the X-Mid Pro 1 up to 6'8" because a user of this height in a sleeping quilt would have 3" of loft at their foot end (83" total length) and thus would still have 3-4" of clearance at both ends or more if they are side sleeper.ĭCF is commonly joined together using a double sided tape or sewing. This is longer than all comparable tents. This means if someone is 6'0" (72") they could sleep straight with an additional 3" of sleeping bag loft at both ends and still have 12" extra inches of length. With the X-Mid Pro 1 the fly is 98" long and the end panels are steep, so even 12" off the ground there is still over 90" of useable length. However, other tents normally slope inwards quite a bit such that 12" off the ground (at the height of your sleeping bag) the length is commonly about 6-12" shorter. The X-Mid Pro 1 has a 90" floor length, which is good but not that much longer than most other tents which are 84-90". To understand the useable length in a tent you have to consider both how long the floor is, and how much the length slopes inward off the ground. In addition, there are dual large vestibules which put the main area beside the door instead of blocking it, and can easily hold large packs and other gear. You can comfortably sit up throughout the length of the tent while two people can easily sit in the tent together. The result is best in class useable length (suitable for hikers up to 6’8″), while the 32″ floor width easily accommodates the widest pads with room to spare. The floor length is a generous 90″ which is combined with steep end walls such that the length is still 90" at 15" off the ground. The X-Mid Pro 1 accomplishes this with its space efficient geometry that moves the two poles further area to create 25-50% more interior volume than competing tents, including more useable length, headroom, and shoulder room. It's not just spacious in the context of superlight tents, but actually is more spacious than almost every 1P tent - at any weight. The X-Mid Pro 1 is a seriously spacious tent with more interior volume than any other 1P trekking pole tent. Unfortunately, the following year wasn’t better for the Cobalt, as the 2006 model year was still plagued with widespread issues. It’s not as bad as the power steering issue, but it’s certainly annoying. The common fix was to press the gear shifter and wiggle the wheel a little bit. When putting the car in park, the key sometimes wouldn’t come out of the ignition. It’s such a widespread issue that GM sent a recall notice for the 2005-2010 Chevy Cobalt due to a faulty power steering motor.Īnother source of frustration for 2005 Cobalt owners is the key getting stuck in the ignition. At 29 pounds, this compressor is also one of the lightest options on this list, but like most air compressors, it isn't as easy to move around as a cordless drill, for instance. The included 15-foot air hose also makes it easy to use outdoors around the yard. The high-efficiency air compressor motor is designed to easily start up even in cold weather. If you're staring down a big outdoor project, this kit really shines. We found that all of the included nailers were effective, useful tools that greatly reduced the time and effort required to drive multiple fasteners in a large project, such as building a deck. The compressor's oil-free electric motor is rated for a maximum of 150 psi and durable enough to last a long time. The kit includes a 6-gallon compressor, 18-gauge brad nailer, 3/8-inch crown stapler, and 16-gauge finish nailer. We also noted how well it maintained pressure and its overall ease of use. We then used the separate pressure outlet regulator to deliver the pressure we needed as specified for each tool. We found that the tool worked fairly quickly, on average six minutes for the compressor to reach 140 psi from zero. We tested the Bostitch BTFP3KIT Air Compressor in one of our own backyards to rebuild a deck and praised the set as a great introduction to air-driven tools. Campbell Hausfeld has designed this thing to last, with several key components lasting up to four times longer than the competition, according to the manufacturer. One of the best features of this compressor is its durability. Julia Galef breaks this down into 4 main sections in the book, with specific concepts and tools for each section. How to Develop and Thrive with the Scout Mindset The earlier you develop an accurate map of the world, the faster you can take effective action to achieve the outcomes you want. This allows us to better evaluate risks, see a wider range of opportunities, understand issues more deeply and address problems effectively. On the other hand, the scout mindset helps us to see things more clearly and objectively. We need to keep rationalizing or denying new information to sustain our belief, thus deepening our self-delusion. Unfortunately, we also end up sacrificing sound judgment or accuracy to make poor decisions that we may regret in future. You can learn more about each of these benefits in our complete summary bundle (which includes a 16-page pdf, an infographic pdf and an audio mp3 of The Scout Mindset summary). Specifically, the soldier’s mindset serves 3 emotional benefits (comfort, self-esteem, and morale), and 3 social benefits (persuasion, image and belonging). Julia Galef suggests that we intuitively adopt the soldier mindset because it’s instantly gratifying. In reality, no one adopts a 100% scout or soldier mindset, and we switch regularly between the 2 mindsets. The scout and soldier mindsets are merely archetypes. ![]() We ask, “is this true?” with a genuine desire to uncover the truth. ![]() We’re driven by accuracy motivated reasoning. When you uncover mistakes or inaccuracies, it gives you a chance to improve your map. At the same time, you know that a map is only a rough estimation of reality, so there’ll always be missing details or errors. The goal is to be as accurate as possible. If we want to accept something we ask, “ Can I believe it?” If we want to reject something we ask, “ Must I believe it? This is also known as the confirmation bias, denial, delusion, self-justification or rationalization. Even if we start out with good intentions to find an answer/solution, we end up trying to prove that we’re right. we decide what to believe based on our underlying motivation. We’re driven by directionally motivated reasoning, i.e. Changing your mind feels like surrendering or being defeated. We focus on fortifying our case and shooting down the other party’s points. We may think that we’re being objective when we’re subconsciously defending our views and beliefs. The soldier mindset is like defensive combat. In a nutshell, there are 2 ways of thinking: the soldier mindset and the scout mindset: 2 ARCHETYPAL WAYS OF THINKING: Scout vs Soldier In this book, she explains how we can use the scout mindset and tools to see things as they are instead of how we want/expect them to be. The question is, when do we succumb to flawed thinking and when do we rise above them? What can we learn from our own successes and how can we multiply what works?įor years, Julia Galef searched for answers to these questions. Yet, we can also acknowledge our flaws and errors, embrace change and be truthful with ourselves. Human beings often deny our mistakes and resist change. Unfortunately, understanding blind spots and biases won’t make you immune to them. There are now lots of research and books about human irrationality and cognitive biases. Do check out our book summary bundle in pdf/mp3 infographic, text and audio formats! In The Scout Mindset summary, you’ll learn how to develop a set of attitude and tools to see the world with more openness, curiosity and accuracy. In this book, Julia Galef explains why it’s so hard to overcome our cognitive biases and how we can learn to see the world more clearly. By default, a truth-seeking mindset generally doesn’t fill those functions, so if we’d like to get people to adopt the “scout mindset,” we’ve got to address those needs head-on.Everyone suffers from mental biases and blind spots. Instead, Julia recognizes that motivated reasoning fulfills important emotional and social functions. Writing about rationality often imagines that if only we could just explain people’s biases to them and show them some Bayesian reasoning, they’d start thinking clearly. But what really interests me about Julia’s approach is that she focuses on the root causes of motivated reasoning as emotional/attitudinal, rather than cognitive. I expected this to mostly be a distillation of CFAR/ LessWrong-style ideas for a pop audience-which it does do, and which is great. Julia Galef’s first book, about the differences between motivated reasoning (“soldier mindset”) and truth-seeking (“scout mindset”), and why people engage in one rather than the other. |
